Wickham One-day Events
On the last Saturday of every month from March to October (with an exception for May when we run Dropzone instead), UKLTA hires a site at Wickham near Portsmouth and Southampton for a day of gaming.
The usual format is to play some lasertag skirmish games in the morning, break for lunch and then run a LARP for a few hours in the afternoon.
These days are a great, low cost way to get a feel for how our games work and to practise using our equipment. New players are welcome and loan sensors and weapons are available.
The event costs £10 per player but, for insurance reasons, you must be a UKLTA member. This costs £5 for a single event or £10 for a year.
The Combat South Woodland site on Mayles Lane in Wickham features 90 acres of woodland and several built-up locations including a village and a two-storey fort.
There are toilet facilities and ample parking.
From Junction 10 (M27), follow the A32 to Wickham. Just before Wickham, take the A34 to Botley, follow for 300 yards. Just before the railway bridge, turn left into Mayles Lane, continue for ¾ mile. The turning for Combat South is on the left. You can use the postcode PO17 5ND to program your SatNav. It will take you into Mayles Lane, then you’ll need to continue another 300yrds as above.
The nearest railway station is Botley. Lifts to the site can be arranged, please contact the game organiser in advance if you want one.
What you should bring
You will need footwear and clothing suitable for spending a day outdoors in the woods. Combat boots and military surplus camouflage are popular choices. The LARP may have specific costuming requirements which will be announced on the event page.
Bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink. It is a good idea to carry water into the woods with you (e.g. a in water bottle you can attach to a belt or fit into a jacket pocket).
You will need a DOT compatible sensor and a DOT or WOW compatible lasertag gun. Loan equipment can be arranged but please contact the game organiser in advance!
Times are approximate and may undergo significant changes to accommodate the needs of a particular game or the weather.
After the event, a group usually continues on to The Railway Arms at Botley (SO30 2DN) for drinks and chat. Some then continue on to round the day off with a takeaway (SO30 2HE).
